The Opening Reception for the York Art Association’s Rottler Award Selection Exhibit was held on Sunday, June 19, 2011. The exhibit features two works by each of 42 members.

The selection Juror was Amy S. Hammond, Exhibitions Manager/Preparator at the Susquehanna Art Museum. Ms. Hammond has also curated exhibitions for the Handprint Identity Project at Elizabethtown College and for the DOSHI Gallery of Contemporary Art at The State Museum of Pennsylvania.

The exhibit guide offers a brief history of the Rottler Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts:

“The Rottler award for Excellence in the Visual Arts is made possible throught a bequest to the York Art Association by the late E. Kurt Rottler, a devoted member and President of the Board of Directors from 1965 through 1970.

The Rottler fund provides a $300 prize to each of the five winners of this prestigious members-only exhibit and funds awards for other shows throughout the year. The fund also supports awards to York College of Pennsylvania art students and inner-city art programs run by Yorkarts.

The Rottler endowment is the perfect example of the power of a bequest to guarantee the future success and growth of our association in particular and the visual arts in general. Thanks to the bequest by E. Kurt Rottler, the York Art Association has been able to award almost $100,000 for excellence in the visual arts.

Thank you to all of the artists who submitted the outstanding entries for this exhibit, and congratulations to our five winners of the Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts. We look forward to their group exhibit in 2011.”

Vulcania Graphics & Fine Art joins the York Art Association in saluting the 2011 winners of the Rottler Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts:

I am exceedingly elated to announce my very first solo exhibition. Susquehanna Simpatico is a collection of images that are both an exploration of and a meditation on the life of and on the Susquehanna River in and around Wrightsville, Pennsylvania.

Water covers nearly 71% of the Earth’s surface and the human body is approximately 60% water. Water is essential for all known forms of life. It is one of the four classical elements and is widely regarded as the basic substance of the universe. It is a symbol of purification in literature and in most religions. Water is indeed the life’s blood of the Earth. It purifies and sustains. It is timeless and eternal and it connects all things in the cycle of life.

I have printed all of the images on canvas, stretched them on 3/4″ stretcher bars (back stapled) and finished them with hand crafted poplar “floater” frames. All of the frames are finished with a variety of water based Minwax stains and Minwax water based Polycrylic. The canvases have also been coated with a satin UV acrylic.

Susquehanna Simpatico will be exhibited from May 21 through June 12, 2011 at Jonal Gallery, 653 Locust Street, Columbia, PA 17512 (across from Mt. Bethel Cemetery between 6th and 7th Streets). The opening reception is from 5 PM to 9 PM on Saturday, May 21, 2011.

Gallery hours are 10 AM to 5 PM Saturdays, 12 PM to 5 PM Sundays and 5 PM to 9 PM for Columbia’s Fourth Friday events each month.

For a sneak preview, visit Jonal Gallery this Thursday evening, May 19 from 7 PM to 9 PM for “A Night at the Gallery” featuring Harrisburg poet Gene Hosey as he shares his stylistic poetry on the Main Gallery stage. $10.00 per person pre-paid admission is required. Jonal Gallery accepts Visa, Mastercard and Discover.

Contact Dale Weibley or John Novak at 717-681-9400 to reserve your seat or for more information.

I am looking forward to seeing you at Jonal Gallery!

Peace,

Sunset Photo Metallic Paper enables you to create stunning prints that previously could be output only in a darkroom. The metallic, high-gloss surface on this 10-mil, 255gsm photo paper, results in prints that are sharp, vibrant, and exceptionally rich-looking. With this breakthrough paper, prints look very similar to those produced by labs that use KODAK PROFESSIONAL ENDURA Metallic VC Digital Paper™ in conjunction with a photo processor such as a Durst Lambda or a LightJet.

The utterly distinctive look of Sunset Photo Metallic Paper comes from a combination of a subtle sheen infused in the base paper and a high-gloss reflective finish. Sunset Photo Metallic Paper will enable you to add new levels of dimensionality and depth to your fine art prints that stand out from the others.

Sunset Photo Metallic prints are only $14.00 per square foot! If you would like to see samples or to discuss other paper options for your fine art images, please Contact Us.

Made from 90% bamboo fibres and 10% cotton, this natural warm-toned and OBA free genuine art paper offers maximum aging resistance, an extremely large colour gamut and a high colour density. Its premium Inkjet coating also offers a very high level of water resistance. Bamboo 290, with its fine, soft surface feel, lends itself particularly well to warm-toned colour and monochrome prints of fine art photography and fine art reproduction.

The traditional Hahnemühle paper mill has developed the worldwide first Fine Art inkjet paper made from bamboo fibers. The natural white paper with a warm tone combines spiritual photography with environmental considerations. “Bamboo 290” consists of fibers from highly renewable bamboo grass… a premium, soft Fine Art paper from ultra-pure bamboo fibers and pure spring water. This paper opens up a whole new artistic and spiritual dimension in Fine Art printing.

I’m particularly impressed with the deep rich blacks this paper yields and I feel it is a great choice for hand-drawn fine art reproductions!

Walczyk & Young Studios has now transitioned to Vulcania Graphics & Fine Art, LLC. We will be forwarding the old wystudios.com web address to this new web address. If you have subscribed to the old Walczyk & Young Studios’ RSS feed, please re-subscribe to the new RSS feed here at Vulcania Graphics & Fine Art. Here is the new RSS feed address http://feeds2.feedburner.com/VGAFA

If you previously signed up for email notifications, that is also going to change. However, I have not integrated the Feedburner email subscriptions feature into this new website. Feedburner was acquired by Google and the code used to sign up for new email subscriptions has changed. Our current Wordpress theme (webpage theme) doesn’t have the new Google Feedburner email subscription code built into it, so I’ll have to work on getting that feature added again using the new code. I apologize for any inconvenience and I hope you will subscribe to the new RSS feed—at least until I get the email subscription feature working again!

Please make sure to update your address books with our new business name, web address and email address!

Yes, the rumors are true! We’ll be changing our name from Walczyk & Young Studios to Vulcania Graphics & Fine Art. If you’ve been reading about our business adventures in Second Life this name should sound familiar. We’ve had a lot of good feedback from the branding efforts for our virtual fine art business and we’ve decided to continue our efforts by changing our real life business name… we feel more “at home” with the new name and Vulcania Graphics & Fine Art is more descriptive of our services.

Why “Vulcania”? When we first began to experiment with having a virtual business in Second Life, our island region was already named “Vulcania”. It seemed appropriate as the island was tropical and included a volcano. We also felt connected to this land because of our personal interest in Hawaiian mythology, particularly the volcano goddess of creation, Pele. As we created and developed our virtual art gallery and studio we began to notice synchronicities happening with our real life business. Hence, our real life business was also being transformed.

Conducting business using two different names has been confusing for us as well as our customers. Realigning our business to include virtual endeavors will help to encompass the many different forms artists choose to display and market their artwork.

During the next couple of weeks you’ll notice a modified website and web address (domain name) as well as a new email address. We’ll forward the current web address to the new web address but you’ll eventually want to update any of your bookmarks to this site after the change has occurred. We’ll also post our new email address and send out an email notification to everyone.

Both Dan and I are very excited about the transition and we’re grateful to all those who have helped bring about Vulcania Graphics & Fine Art.

Mahalo!
